Project Details
J.H. Hiers was awarded the Beaufort County Dirt Road Resurfacing Contract #54 to improve dirt roads located on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. This project entailed grading and placing 6” stone base on three (3) roads, totaling 2.55 miles. School Road, Church Road, Francis Jones Road, along with placing a stockpile of stone for future County maintenance.
Challenges and Unique Details
Daufuskie Island is only accessible by boat making logistics the biggest challenge. Transporting the equipment and stone could not have been completed without the help of Stevens Towing Company, Inc. Stevens transported all J.H. Hiers equipment and dump trucks from the Stevens’ yard on Yonges Island, along with all the stone base from the port in Charleston. Martin Marietta was instrumental in shipping the stone from Nova Scotia, Canada where it was offloaded in Charleston. Then, it was reloaded onto Stevens’ barges to be shipped to Daufuskie Island. Once at Daufuskie, stabilizing barges created a temporary bulkhead to unload the barged aggregate onto waiting tri axle dump trucks.
Project Results
The logistic of this project required more planning than our usual projects. This additional level of difficulty was a great reminder of why planning is so integral to the success of any job. We were able to identify and mitigate all problems that presented themselves. It was a pleasure working with the County and with the residents of Daufuskie Island. It is nice being part of such a special place.
